An excess of words on the Kröller-Müeller Museum,
The Museum is situated in Holland near the German border,
in the middle of the 'Hoge Veluwe National Park'. The Park
is pretty big and I biked with younger family members, on a
circuit for as as long as it was possible. It would have
been better if I had hired an electric bike as one of our
number did. So unfortunately I cut everyone's ride in
half.
The Museum has the second largest collection of Van Gogh
works in the world (90 of his paintings and over 180
drawings). The first slot is held by the Van Gogh Museum in
Amsterdam.
But Kröller-Müeller has also many inportant
impressionist and later works, as well as a number of
important works from centuries before. It also has a
massive sculpture garden. The museum was founded by art
collector Helène Kröller-Müller (11/2/1869
- 14/12/1939) and opened in 1938. She, I would guess, was
one of Van Gogh's most important patrons in his lifetime
and one who kept him alive as long as he did survive. In
the period between 1907 and 1922 she acquired, all told,
nearly 11,500 works of art. Somewhere in the exhibit they
have the amounts paid by her to Van Gogh over the
years.
In 1935, Helène donated her whole collection to the
state of the Netherlands. In 1938, the museum, which was
designed by the Belgian Henry van de Velde, opened to the
public. Helène died in December 1939. The sculpture
garden was added in 1961 and the new exhibition wing,
designed by Wim Quist, opened in 1977.
