As noted previously, the L*nn*n data indexed below has been
extracted from diverse sources, but principally the GRO
births, marriages and deaths index and certificates. It
should be stressed that the data may be partial, and
transcription errors may exist. Also, the concentration of
research was on Dublin Lenn*ns. Given the alphabet, Lann*n
and Linn*n may generally have been missed in recording.
Other variants such as Lenehan, are generally not recorded,
nor are Lennons etc. outside the greater Dublin area
(including Rathdown). Given, these disclaimers, data,
representing over 9400 (in September 2002) events, are
quite comprehensive. An analysis of the data is contained
in "The Dublin data: some
comments" on page 6. For confidentiality purposes,
2100 entries of possible living people have been excluded
(birth events being included in the data to 1900, marriages
to 1920 and deaths to 1980). Birth events to 1974, deaths
to 1990 and marriages to 1975, are available in my
unpublished data. Look-ups can be carried out in this
supplementary data for L*nn*n researchers on specific
request. As additional certificates are purchased
(generally in tens - resulting in, at most thirty entries),
these will first be included in an 'extras'
category. Subsequently they will be integrated in the
sorted data.
Automatic conversion of excel data had resulted in very large html files (many around 1Mega per page, with 'J' and 'M' even requiring two pages). Things were improved by a factor of 5 by using Hot Metal Pro generated code rather than that produced by Excel. With the possible exception of the 'J' and 'M' pages, both just above 500k, html viewing is now feasible. But the optimal recommendation is still to download the pdf files which are now 'only' 4 times smaller (as opposed to 20 times previously). It should also be noted that the html tables take additional time to format (so you may be at 91% loaded for several minutes on large pages!). The pdf files have the additional benefit of being updated more frequently. One slight downside is that longer entries may be truncated. If you do not already have the Acrobat Reader for reading pdf. files, the most recent version can be downloaded free from the Acrobat site (unfortunately a fairly hefty 8.6M download, but it is also widely available on computer magazine CD-Roms).
Content of columns in data
1. Reference No.
2. Event: b=birth, m=marriage, d=death,
l=living(presumed), ad=already dead, u=unknown;
3. Christian Name;
4. Surname variant: a=Lennan, o=Lennon, nan=Lenan
etc.;
5. Year;
6. Quarter;
7. Date;
8. Area (narrow) or church, CoI=Church of Ireland;
9. Area (wide);
10. Sex, u=unknown (a few m/f errors appear here and
there);
11. Second principal (sometimes inverted i.e. f: usually
father of, but early numbers could be father to, also w:
can be wife but, sometimes, witness - but most instances
corrected in March 2000 data). Numbers refer to another
entry for same event in column 1. Most events have around
three entries - thus a birth would have a Lennan child,
mother and father, a death will usually have one or two (a
Lennan witness), a marriage of a Lennan male usually three
(husband, wife and father of husband) but sometimes Lennan
witnesses, etc., sis=sister, br=brother.;
12. Third principal or other descriptive such as
occupation, area or maiden name (sometimes m or, more
regularly n). A no. refers to an event of the ID in the
first column;
13. Age;
14. Additional information (derived=a birth derived from
age given at marriage or death);
15. Basic source: most common is r=GRO data, others are
con=convict, dd or ods=Dublin directories, Eliz=Elizabethan
pardons, g=grave, gv=Griffith's Valuation,
IGI=International Genealogical Index, ml=marriage licence,
pr=parish record (DLRHC being Dun Laoghaire/Rathdown
Heritage Centre purchased data, DHC being Dublin Heritage
Centre), vis=visitation, w=will;
16. Extra on source (e.g. Page in IGI, or reference for
GRO - where 2393 would be Volume 2 Page No. 393 and 12548
would be Volume 12 page 548; cert=information from
photocopy of GRO entry);
17. Address: Street No.;
18. Address: Street;
19. Maiden name associated with the event. For father at
birth, wife's maiden name usually included.
