First quarter 2006

At the beginning of the year I would recommend the Railway Antiques Guide, a monthly publication the first issue of which appeared in September 2003. It is published by Tim Petchey and Lindsay Ferris, and available on subscription, price £3.50 per issue plus overseas postage, from the RAG Office, 23 Gloucester St., Winchcombe, Glocs. GL54 5LX. Each month RAG has priceless material on railwayana, including Irish material. For relevant material to date see the back issues sub-page.

Fakes: A number of creative small, GSWR model, 4 line gate notices have been appearing on ebay over December/January with the going rate being a pretty consistent £36 (although a Tralee & Killarney went for £53.50). These follow on from those appearing at car boot sales in Ireland over the past two years. Noted examples have been CB&SCR, C&PR, NR&WR, W&TR, GN&WR and T&KR. Somewhere else a Giant's Causeway version was seen. Apart from the obvious lack of a link between these companies and the GSWR, and some of their disappearance way before the GSWR version came into existence, the initials are generally somewhat clumsy and the signs show no sign of use. However, it is quite difficult to determine fake GSWR and WDLR 4 line gates from the real thing (Talisman caught their WDLR offering in September, but not before it initially seems to have come through the selection process). Also there is a known T&DLR small GSWR-style trespass, so a 4-line gate from that company would not be impossible, as from some other companies in the GSWR orbit. So one ends up looking for acceptable age and use. Other creations appearing have been big GSWR Ormsby' trespasses (without lugs). These are turning up as far afield as Australia and the US - the US one sold for $15 (probably less than the cost of the iron!) but the Australian one went for $AU63. Perhaps it will be time soon for a separate rogue signs' page (now, in May, it is on line at Fake Irish railwayana on the second site)!

A Midland Counties Railway phone auction in February had: an LMSNCC wagon plate 1891 £65. On seeing the photo in May, it looks totally wrong - the '9', in particular, is not the BNCR/MR/LMSNCC distinctive style, but, then again, neither are the rest of the characters, e.g. the '1's' see the real '1's', and the 'C's' etc.. For comparison purposes see also the real '9's' down the page or on the MRNCC page on the same site for the real 8's even if one on 'MRNCC 1648' is upside down! [and a W&L Ry axlebox cover £130 - but Welshpool and Llanfair!].
