The following material is extracted from minutes of meetings, a card index, lists, etc. in my father's papers regarding the Donnybrook Scouts past members' association. A list of names of past scouts, contacted in 1966-68, is also provided. Other photos available are of Joe Mooney (Brother Eugene O.F.M.Cap, Zambia), Tony Nelson receiving presentation from s/m Jim O'Connor 40th, Presentation of Diocesan Colours to Donnybrook in 1951 at Clonliffe College, Joe Doyle & 'Tiny' Dunne, Tiger Patrol Carlow 1952 - George O'Connor, Paddy Sheehan, Denis McLoughlin, Paddy McDonald & Niall Jones, Presentation to Mrs. O'Reilly and Mrs. Egon in Scout Hall. Names could be useful for those researching family with links to the area. No further information is, however, available on the names listed.
In 1927 Monsignor Daniel Moloney LL D. founded in Donnybrook the 3rd Dublin Troop of the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland. By 1930 the original Troop which had been the first to hold a weekend camp and church parade (Bray 1928) had increased so much in numbers that two other Troops, viz. 40th and 41st were added. in 1928 Monsignor Moloney, assisted by the brothers George and Leo Purcell, both highly accomplished bandsmen formed a pipe band. The band, composed solely of scouts, became Junior Pipe Band Champions in 1932 and was nominated to represent Ireland at the International Folk Festival in Brittany. In 1930 the Band also led the C.B.S.I. pilgimage to Lourdes, where amidst the many Troop colours and flags of all countries, it had the privilege of being the first Pipe Band to play in Rosary Square. Again in 1934, having left Dublin on board the "Lancastria" (sunk Bay of Biscay, World War II) and played at Gibraltar and Morocco en route to Rome, it was the first Pipe Band to play in St. Peter's Square.
